Distillation is a process used widely in the laboratory or in wider working environments for separating or purifying liquids or liquid mixtures based on the different boiling points of individual components.
Distillation Applications:
• Separation and purification of miscible liquid mixtures in organic chemistry
• Drying of solid residues and/or solvent removal
• Fractional distillation of liquids from polymers and petroleum products
• Removal of particulates or other solid contaminants
• As part of a water purification system for production of distilled water for laboratory use
• Specialist steam distillation-based applications such as Kjeldahl analysis of nitrogen and proteins in food, beverage, or environmental samples
What Types of Distillation Equipment Are Available?
Conventional distillation apparatus, typically comprising individual, jointed borosilicate glassware components assembled by the user (depending upon the application), using appropriate clamps, stands, and supports. Most conventional distillation assemblies combine a round-bottomed distilling flask to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification, fitted with a stoppered or jointed neck to which is attached a downward-sloping, inclined side-arm for connection to a condensing unit to cool the heated vapors back down to their liquid state. Heating mantles are the preferred heat source for improved temperature control. These conventional distillation units are also available supplied complete and ready-assembled for added convenience and ease of use.
Specialized automated distillation equipment, notably units designed for the determination of volatile acidity and alcoholic strength by volume in wines, musts, and alcoholic beverages, and units designed for Kjeldahl nitrogen or protein determinations.

Distilling Adapter, Double, 10° Angled Side Neck, 24/40 Joint, 6mm PTFE Stopcock, 1/2" Swagelok. Adapter is designed for use with flasks or reaction vessel lids that have a 10° angled side neck. Adapter has a lower inner joint and two top outer joints. Lower stopcock is a 6mm PTFE stopcock with a 1/2” or 3/4” OD distillate takeoff for use with a compression fitting and TFE tubing. PLEASE NOTE: ADAPTER CAN BE USED WITH COMPOUND ANGLED SIDE NECKS.

Distilling Head, Short Path, Vigreux Indents, 14/20 Thermometer Joint, 24/40 Lower Inner Joint, Approx. 195mm Width x 150mm Height. Designed for use with small quantities where hold up between the flask and receiver must be kept to a minimum. The thermometer bulb and stem serve as column packing. Upper hose connections are for cooling lines while the lower connection is for vacuum. Available with Vigreux indentations to improve efficiency. NOTE: The 14/20 size accepts a 1” immersion 7/12 or 10/18 thermometer, while the 24/40 and 29/42 sizes accepts a 2” immersion, 10/30 thermometer.

Vacuum adapter has an inner joint and a sealed in drip tip. Condenser length is 100mm on the 14/20 size and 200mm on the 24/40 and 29/42 sizes.

Similar to CG-1241 but with the Vigreux column vacuum jacketed to improve distillation performance.

Distilling Receiver, 50mL, Dean-Stark, Modified, 24/40 Joint Size, 4mm PTFE Stopcock, Approx. 355mm Height x 240mm Width. This innovative and compact Dean-Stark receiver is designed for azeotropic distillations using solvents that are heavier than water. The solvent vapor travels through tube “A” to a condenser inserted in the top standard taper outer joint. Vapors are condensed and collected in the reservoir section. The layers separate and the heavier than water solvent overflows through tube “C” back into the distillation flask. The upper water layer is drained out intermittently using the 4mm PTFE stopcock “D”. Capacity of the lower reservoir is approx. 50mL.

Used between the vapor tube and evaporation flask on a rotary evaporator to prevent contents of the flask from being drawn into the condenser in the event of “bumping.” Traps have a 24/40 top outer joint and the listed size of lower inner joint.
